Paști Large Abstract Painting

Paști Large Abstract Painting pays tribute to a unique 19th-century Easter tradition from Galeș, a village in Mărginimea Sibiului. This tradition, deeply rooted in faith and cultural heritage, emerged during a time when Habsburg policies were unfavorable to Romanian Orthodoxy. Pious residents of Galeș traveled to Jerusalem for Easter, inspired by the Tomb of the Lord. Upon their return, they recreated this sacred arrangement, known as “The House of the Lord,” in their village church.

This structure, displayed from Good Friday until The Ascension of the Lord (Ispas), featured a wooden frame adorned with fir branches, designed to resemble a small cell. Four small fir trees marked its corners, and it was placed at the center of the church, symbolizing deep reverence for the holy season.

This painting is part of The Calendar Collection, a series of 14 works depicting the most significant celebrations of the pastoral Romanian year. Inspired by the rich traditions, culture, and mythology of Mărginimea Sibiului, these paintings capture the spirit of one of Romania’s most authentic regions.

The cultural layers reflected in these celebrations include:

• Ancestral religion, preserved in fragments.
• Solar worship, passed down from the Mithraic cult.
• Christian traditions, where early Christianity adapted pagan customs (e.g., transforming the Winter Solstice into Christmas or aligning pagan thunder god celebrations with Saint Elijah’s feast).
