The idea came at night, somewhere between sleep and waking.

I was thinking about the geometry carved into Romanian wooden objects — the rosettes, the braids, the solar crosses — and how they have been sitting in ethnographic museums for a century, behind glass, silent. Beautiful and unreachable.

And then it came: what if that geometry could live again — not as a museum piece, not as a reproduction, but as something you hold in your hands right now, today, and fill with color and attention? What if the mandala — that ancient form of contemplation — was always already there inside the carved wood, waiting to be opened up?

That half-asleep thought is this coloring book.

I have been sitting with Romanian carved wood for a long time now. Not as a historian — as someone who kept being stopped by it. Stopped by the precision of a spindle whorl no larger than a coin, packed with an entire visual vocabulary. Stopped by a cheese mold pressing a family’s sign into something as ordinary as breakfast. Stopped by the fact that the people who made these things did not separate beauty from use.

Wood Soul is the book that came out of all that stopping. It is an adult coloring book — 32 original mandalas — drawn from the geometric motifs of four carved wooden objects: the distaff, the cheese mold, the spindle whorl, and the carved gate. Each design takes the radial logic already present in the original carvings and opens it outward into full-circle mandala form. A new way to revive them. A way to make them yours.

Rosettes, solar discs, interlocking diamonds. A language built, for centuries or more at the Romanian countryside, entirely from a chisel and the patience of lonely evenings.

What’s inside Wood Soul

The book is organized around the four objects, 8 mandalas each. Every chapter opens with a short cultural essay — not academic, but grounding — so you understand what you are coloring before you color it.

Chapter I
The Distaff
Furca
Mandalas 1–8 · courtship & devotion
Chapter II
The Cheese Mold
Păpușarul
Mandalas 9-16 · abundance & identity
Chapter III
The Spindle Whorl
Prâsnelul
Mandalas 17–24 · small things & momentum
Chapter IV
The Gate
Poarta
Mandalas 25–32 · thresholds & declaration

There is also a visual glossary of the traditional motifs — the rosette, the rhombus, the tree of life, the braid— so you can read the forms as you color them. And a traditional color palette recommended at the back: madder red, ochre gold, forest green, indigo night, linen white.
