The Florii Large Abstract Painting is a captivating tribute to the ancient Palm Sunday customs of Săliște, a town in Mărginimea Sibiului. This artwork beautifully encapsulates the essence of a tradition that has been faithfully practiced for centuries, symbolizing renewal, faith, and community.
On Palm Sunday, children in traditional attire gather under the guidance of priests and cantors to collect willow branches (“stâlpari”) from the riverbank. This procession, accompanied by the singing of the “Hymn of Palm Sunday”, composed by Picu Pătruț in the 19th century, continues into the Great Church in the center of Săliște.
Here, the children kneel, receive blessings from the priests, and distribute the willow branches among parishioners. They also keep some branches to sprinkle on family graves, honoring their loved ones. This custom, deeply rooted in Christian and ancestral traditions, continues to this day as a cherished expression of community and spirituality.
The Florii Large Abstract Painting is one of 14 artworks in a collection that celebrates the most important pastoral Romanian traditions. Inspired by the rich culture, folklore, and mythology of Mărginimea Sibiului, the collection reflects the layered cultural influences of the region:
The Florii Large Abstract Painting is more than just an artwork—it’s a celebration of faith, tradition, and community. Bring the magic of Mărginimea Sibiului’s Palm Sunday customs into your home with this evocative masterpiece.
